Beyonce’s new Lion King album, The Gift, has reportedly suffered ‘disappointing’ sales in its first week of release, despite boasting a star-studded tracklist
According to The Sun, Beyonce was paid over $30 million to be the voice of Nala in The Lion King remake. The sum also included a payment for her to record the film’s official soundtrack and release an album.
However, the first five days of the album’s life have not been promising. The album has only been downloaded 949 times in the UK.
The album’s failure comes a year after the 37 year old’s album with husband Jay Z reached only number 5 in the charts. This has been her worst performing album so far.
Regardless of Queen Bey’s disappointing performance with the soundtrack album, the remake itself is doing very well.
Jon Favreau is the person behind the remake of the 1994 Disney smash hit. The live action movie starring Beyonce, Donald Glover and Seth Rogen has brought in $433 million in box office sales from around the world.
A source said, “Bosses did everything they could to get Beyonce on board because they know she is so loved. There has been a lot of buzz around the film and Beyonce’s involvement but her spin-off album has been massively disappointing.”
The source continued, “The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack was the biggest-selling album of 2018, and Disney had hoped that getting someone as huge as Beyonce to do an album like this could match its success. But her records clearly don’t have the pulling power they once did. For someone like Beyonce, who is seen as an unstoppable force in music.”
The source continued, “It’s remarkable that she is being beaten in the charts by an emerging talent like Freya.”
