Huge fire rips through block of flats in east London

Around 100 firefighters are battling a huge fire that engulfed a newly built block of flats on Sunday afternoon in east London.

Footage shows the building is engulfed by fire from the ground to the sixth floor as 15 fire engines were deployed to tackle the blaze.

A Met Police spokesperson said there had been no reports of injuries at this stage and residents have been evacuated.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has put up road blocks at the scene and described fire as a “major incident”.

The cause of the fire, which is now under control, is not yet known.

Barking and Dagenham Police said on Twitter: “Police on scene with London Fire Brigade at De Pass Gardens, Barking dealing with a major incident, whereby a block of flats is alight. Evacuations are in progress and road closures are being implemented.”
