An unidentified man attacked and killed three people including two police officers, the incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET) on Tuesday near Cafe des Augustins on Boulevard d’Avroy.in Belgium when an attacker stabbed two policemen from behind before stealing their service weapons and using them on the officers, The third victim was a 22-year-old passenger in a car fired on by the suspect, near a school in Liege.
the suspect then took refuge in a local high school where he held a woman hostage. When police intervened, the man opened fire, injuring several other officers, before he was shot dead.
The man’s motive is not yet clear but the incident is being treated as terrorism.
The gunman has been identified locally as Benjamin Herman.
The 36-year-old from Rochefort in France is understood to have been on leave from prison at the time of the attacked and has been released temporarilyon Monday night for “family leave” to prepare reintegration into society, but never returned.
He was said to be known to the police for theft, damage to public property and drug trafficking.
Herman was also considered “unstable” and had no contact with his family, it was also reported that he is thought to have been “radicalised” in prison.
Belgium’s Interior Minister Jan Jambon said that investigators were trying to ascertain “exactly what happened”, adding: “Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act he also said that the country’s crisis center had been monitoring the situation. The crisis center said that the students in the school were safe and that none had been injured.
